Presentation on the Abenaki People by Dan Coutu and Lucy Neel
On July 18th, 2026 at 2 PM at the auditorium at United Christian Academy, 65 School Street in Newport
The Memphremagog Historical Society will host guest speakers Dan Coutu and Lucy Neel with a presentation on the Abenaki People. As we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we also acknowledge that there were few, if any, European settlers yet here in northeastern Vermont. The native people, the Abenaki, were the predominant inhabitants. Dan and Lucy's presentation will inform us about their origin, their relation to other native nations, their territory, and their settlement patterns. They will also explain the Abenaki's decentralized government, their ways of life, and how they were affected by the eventual settlement of their homeland by Europeans.
