The Memphremagog Historical Society of Newport is dedicated to preserving the history of Newport Town and City.

After months of behind-the scenes work, the Memphremagog Historical society is ready to step out. We are now a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization with a new board and an evolving website. Rather than a membership organization, we are a mutual benefit corporation. We invite anyone with interest in Newport’s history and its surrounding towns to join us; share your energy, expertise, and resources to help us preserve our history and to celebrate our small city. Click on “ Become a Friend of MHS” to get on our emailing list. We’ll let you know about our upcoming open house and invite you to meetings.

The current board members of MHS are: Nancy Pepin-Vogt, Sandra McKenny, Mike Coutu, Rick Ufford-Chase, Jason Littleton, and Markus Vogt.

Our Exhibits

The Memphremagog Historical Society of Newport currently has exhibits on the top floor of the Emory A. Hebard State Office Building on Main Street. The hallways are lined with exhibits the outline the history of this area and Newport, from the area’s archaic period through post-colonial times.

Walking Tour of Newport

The MHS has erected 10 historical markers throughout the city. The text of all markers are in both English and French. Take a lovely stroll through Newport and read about its history.
